You<br \/>may have heard there are 3 topics that you avoid at any social gathering: politics, religion and<br \/>money&#8230;in my experience the topic that prompts an immediate visceral withdrawal and<br \/>avoidance of any eye contact is&#8230;Death.<br \/>As an <strong>End of Life Death Doula<\/strong> ~ the vision is to gently widen the crack of curiosity, providing<br \/>safe space to begin the conversation and encouraging honest and heartfelt feelings to<br \/>unravel. To provide compassionate guidance and non-medical support to those who are facing<br \/>the end of their life, while being mindful of their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>There are many decisions that the individual can make that may align with their life choices and <br \/>wishes. This will create the most comforting journey through all phases of their transition; before,<br \/>during and after. I feel the best way to begin is to &#8216;Meet someone where they are&#8221;.<br \/>Meeting someone where they are means putting aside our wants for them, whether those<br \/>wants are in service to them or not, and endeavoring to understand where<br \/>they are in their journey. This is personal, this is intimate, this is an honour. It begins by<br \/>listening without judgment, asking questions openly and honestly, and above all being<br \/>mindful of their journey.<\/p>\n<p>In Yoga there is a Sanskrit word that describes my intention as an<br \/><span style=\"color: #282828;\"><strong>End of Life Doula<\/strong><\/span>: Drishti commonly translates to a &#8216;single point of focus&#8217;.<br \/>My &#8216;Drishti&#8217; is on the individual and their circle. My path is to listen and offer the most effective<br \/>comforting tools to the person on their end of life journey. Outlined below are various offerings<br \/>that I can provide&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>An <span style=\"color: #282828;\"><strong>Advance Care Plan<\/strong><\/span> will help reduce any fear or anxiety that may be experienced by the<br \/>individual and family and discussing choices that may be in their control. We can work on<br \/>and facilitate an Advance Care Plan so those involved are aware of the decisions<br \/>that have been made and the individual will be comforted knowing that their<br \/>wishes are being heard and honoured.<\/p>\n<p>The challenging questions can be asked such as where the individual may<br \/>want to die if there is a choice offered, the atmosphere they wish created and interactions<br \/>that they want or don&#8217;t want with others, including family and friends. Do they envision a<br \/>Celebration of their Life in the garden at their family home?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps a Living Funeral so they are able to exchange all of the love notes that needs to be<br \/>shared? These pieces of the puzzle will ensure all involved are aware of the closer to<br \/>and\u00a0after death choices that the individual has made, and will lessen the burden for all.<br \/>The intention is to make it so the individual and loved ones have more time to be in a loving,<br \/>fear-free and safe space.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #282828;\"><strong>Legacy Projects<\/strong><\/span> can be cathartic and healing for the individual and unfold in many ways.<br \/>Remembering the beautiful moments of one&#8217;s life will always produce a smile or a gentle<br \/>nod&#8230;..these moments can be documented in letters, a family journal, cards or on a paper<br \/>napkin that is close at hand for that special remembrance.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #282828;\"><strong>Spiritual, sensory and emotional support<\/strong><\/span> such as Reiki, Aromatherapy, Guided Meditation,<br \/>Reading, Visualization Techniques, Crystal and Energy work, based on the person&#8217;s beliefs,<br \/>comfort level and wishes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Vigiling<\/strong><\/span> ~ An end of life vigil is the act of offering compassionate companionship and peaceful<br \/>support for the individual and their loved ones through active dying in the days\u200b or hours prior<br \/>to their final journey.<\/p>\n<p>Celebration of Life, Home Funeral, Funeral Service, Memorials or Graveside Services<\/p>\n<p>As a Funeral Celebrant I would be honoured to discuss all options available for this sacred<br \/>time.
